WHAT HAPPENED

MediaTek unveiled the Dimensity 9600 Pro, its first smartphone processor built on TSMC’s 2-nanometer manufacturing process. It also announced the 3-nanometer Dimensity 9600M for a broader part of the flagship-phone market. MediaTek says phones using both chips are coming soon.

The Pro chip includes a dedicated neural processing unit for generative-AI work on the device. MediaTek reported a 51% improvement over the prior generation in the stage that processes a user’s prompt before generation begins. That is a company performance claim, not an independent benchmark, but the direction is unmistakable: more intelligence is being pushed from distant data centers into the object in your hand.

WHY IT MATTERS

Local AI can reduce latency, preserve more privacy and keep selected functions working when connectivity is poor. It may also create a new dividing line between phones: not simply camera quality or screen size, but how much useful intelligence can run without asking the cloud for permission.

The cost is physical. Advanced chips compete for power, cooling and battery life. They are also arriving while AI demand is straining the semiconductor supply chain. The next AI-phone contest may therefore be about efficiency rather than raw model size.
